INTERNSHIPS
Internships provide on-the-job learning experience where students, new professionals or career changers learn the ropes of a career-field while working. While most colleges don’t consider work experience to be considerably important when deciding to admit first-time freshmen, internships are a great way for undergraduates to show colleges they have already gained some experience in their chosen field as students are looking to specialize or extend their degrees. While you can intern in any season, many students are just too busy to take on another commitment during the school year. Typically, employers start looking for interns as early as October of the previous year, and summer internship positions begin to fill up in March. As a summer intern, you’ll learn the ins and outs of the company and industry, develop new skills, and make new connections. You’ll also get training, feedback, and hands-on work experience. Once you’ve completed your first summer internship, you’ll be well-positioned to potentially secure future internships, be offered part time projects that can be done during the school year, breaks or holidays, or be offered further employment. PCI provides both paid and unpaid internships in a variety of disciplines. Benefits to having an internship include:
- Mentors to help guide career choices
- Learn firsthand whether the career is right while getting paid vs while in college only paying to learn if the career is right for you
- Exposure to multiple departments and tasks not likely to be encountered in a formal education environment
- Opportunity to apply your knowledge
- Prepare you / provide practical experience to better assist in further studies
- Prepare you / provide practical experience to better assist in future jobs
- Networking with professionals

- Participants who stand out and display a genuine capacity for a role may be able to turn their interning experience into a job offer
